Additional norms
There are many things that we prefer to do in a certain way, but for whatever reason don't make it into the constitution, collective agreements, visitor infopage or any of the signs around the house. This page can act as a gathering place for those things. These norms are not rules: they can be edited by anyone at any time without formal process.
Toilets
- pee sitting down
- check after every shit: brush if you gotta
- if you finish the toilet paper, butt towels or menstrual products, refill immediately
Bathroom
- empty the drain-sieve of the shower after every use
- make sure the floor is not left wet; there is a towel dedicated for the floor
- leave the shower head in its holder, pointing down
Kitchen

- use the dishwasher for cups, plates, glasses, cutlery (for cleanliness, efficiency and separation of things that can crack)
- hand wash sharp knifes, wooden items, large items, or items that are needed frequently and there is only one of
- do not leave anything in the sink (applies to all sinks)
- use the extraction fan when frying
- if people are preparing a communal meal, ask them before hanging out there
- prepared food should only be left on the table during communal meal times, afterwards it goes to the stove above the oven, the fridge or the food shelf
- don't leave a tiny bit of food—finish it!
- if you finish a pot/pan of communal food, put it to the dirty dishes next to the sink with a bit of water as soon as possible
Cleanliness & order
- don't leave wood wet: wipe up spills on tables
- immediately wet-wipe spills of anything that isn't water
- all communal items you use should go back to the exact same place, if you don't remember ask
- ensure your personal storage locations are clearly labeled: if using a peg or box, you may wish to mark both ends/sides
- specific item storage (i.e. plate shelf, shoe shelf, towel line, bathroom shelf) every resident may take 1 place in each. People may take additional places if abundant, but should proactively clear them before they are needed by others with none. Additional places may be cleared without warning as needed, making sure the person gets their stuff back.
Uncategorized
- if you are not sure how to do something, ask as many times as necessary; if you are sure but it's your first time, don't be
- close windows with all latches secured (1-3)
- minimize your contacts from ringing the doorbell: ensure they can independently enter
- minimize your contacts calling the house phone: encourage direct calling
- soft requirement that research or publications about Kanthaus should be at least open-access
