There are many things that we prefer to do in a certain way, but for whatever reason don't make it into the constitution, collective agreements, visitor infopage or any of the signs around the house. This page can act as a gathering place for those things. These norms are not rules: they can be edited by anyone at any time without formal process.

Toilets

  • pee sitting down
  • check after every shit: brush if you gotta
  • if you finish the toilet paper, butt towels or menstrual products, refill immediately

Bathroom

  • clean the drain of the shower after use
  • make sure the floor is not left wet; there is a towel dedicated for the floor
  • leave the shower head in its holder, pointing down

Kitchen

Check out Kitchen and Cooking for more info.

  • don't hand-wash cups, plates, glasses, cutlery: use the dishwasher (for cleanliness, efficiency and separation of things that can crack)
  • do not put in the dishwasher: sharp knifes, wood, very large items, or items that are needed frequently and there is only one of
  • do not leave things in the sink (applies to all sinks)
  • use the extraction fan when frying
  • if people are preparing a communal meal, ask them before hanging out there
  • prepared food should only be left on the table during communal meal times, afterwards it goes to the stove above the oven, the fridge or the food shelf
  • don't leave a tiny bit of food—finish it!
  • if you finish a pot/pan of communal food, put it to the dirty dishes next to the sink with a bit of water as soon as possible

Uncategorized

  • if you are not sure how to do something, ask as many times as necessary; if you are sure but it's your first time, don't be

  • don't leave wood wet: wipe up spills on tables
  • minimize (your guests or groups) from ringing the doorbell
  • minimize your contacts calling the house phone: encourage direct calling
  • be thorough
  • all communal items you use should go back to the exact same place, if you don't remember ask
  • behave in a way that we don't need to make any more rules
  • soft requirement that research or publications about Kanthaus should be at least open-access
  • Wiki style and formatting
