Communal clothing

Since everything in Kanthaus is communal by default, this is the main section.

Standard procedure

Dirty laundry sorting

Dirty laundry can be put into the laundry containers in the Main Bathroom (K20-2-1b). When those are full they go to the fitting sections in the Washing Room K20-0-1b.

The categories are as follows:

• 40°C: Standard laundry (e.g. most clothes)

• 60°C: Hygiene laundry (e.g. underwear, socks, tissues, bed sheets, towels)

• 90°C: Kill-everything laundry (e.g. kitchen towels, butt towels)

Starting the washing machine

This section needs pictures for better understanding!

We usually have two working washing machines that can run either on tap water or on rain water. Please use the detergent fitting to the kind of water you choose. The switch for the water is right on top of the machines, below the plexiglass. The detergent is in the tiny room above the dirty laundry baskets.

1. Make sure the machine is reasonably full - not more than an extended hand should fit on top.
2. Set the water source to 'rain'.
3. Fill in detergent labeled with 'rain' and measured by the marked measuring cup.
4. Set to 'Buntwäsche' and the degree matching the laundry you want to wash (see categories above).
5. Reduce spin to 1000 .

Wet laundry

Spaces to dry laundry are:

• the outside clothes lines
• the 2nd Bathroom in K22-2-2
• the attics
• K20 staircase ceiling-mounted rack (only if outdoor temperature is above 5°C, to prevent mold on the walls)
• K20-0 wash room ceiling-mounted rack
• if need be more mobile drying racks can be put up in ventilated rooms

Dry laundry

Clothes baskets can be found in the Washing Room. Often they are also left right beside the drying rack and can be used to take down the laundry when dry. Dry communal laundry goes into the Communal Closet. Just leave the basket on the floor, sorting it in can be done during Power Hour.

Winter adjustments to prevent or remove smell

In colder temperatures inside, the laundry dries slower and can develop smell. Especially the clothes washed at only 40°C are at risk, so in winter it should be spun with 1200 rpm (rounds per minute) to speed up the drying process.

Extra drying precautions

• hang in well-ventilated rooms, ideally exhaust rooms (bathrooms, attics, washroom)
• hang up soon after machine is complete, ideally less than 2 hours
• use a big fan to blow air into laundry in the first hours after hanging up
• hang cloths with many/thick layers with lots of space in between (e.g. trousers with pockets, hoodies, sweatpants)
• hang in garden on mobile rack, then move rack into staircase when it gets dark
• wash already smelly stuff at 60°C, this kills most bacteria

Private clothing

If you stay only for a short time or have clothes which you don’t want to share, you should not put them in the laundry baskets - chances are high that you won’t find you stuff again in a reasonable amount of time. Simply run a machine yourself; it should be adequately labeled to make it doable. Please make sure that you have enough things to wash, so that the machine is full, or add some Kanthaus pieces.

When drying your private clothing make sure you somehow label them as yours. Otherwise they might end up in the Communal Closet after all.
