Curtain rail holder
This is a guide on how to properly get curtains to the wall without buying expensive and/or crappy industrial solutions.
Preparing the curtain rail holder
Needed
- quadratic piece of wood, 1.5-2cm width and 15cm length
- angle bracket that's not wider than the piece of wood you're using
- some rubber (e.g. old bicycle tube)
Considering the distance to wall
- rule of thumb: usually around 10 cm distance to wall
- radiators: curtain (rail) should not be directly above it to enable air circulation
- windowsill: rail should be further away from the wall than the windowsill so that the curtain can fall freely
- air circulation: should not be interrupted by the curtain
Drilling the cut-out for the rail
- take a Forstner-drill from the wood drill bits drawer
- drill a hole that's open towards the designated upper side of the wood
Mounting the curtain rail
Don't start drilling right away! Take a pencil and a long spirit level (Wasserwaage). Mark the upper sides of where the curtain rail holders should be. Consider the following factors
Length of curtain rail
- Consider in which direction the window opens. The curtain should not stop windows from fully opening.
- It should generally be at least 25 cm wider on each side than the window opening.
Heigth
- rail should be about 10-15 cm higher than the window niche
Drilling and dowels
- The outside walls should be out of solid bricks which makes it rather easy.
- choose at least a 6mm drill, depending on which dowels there are
- choose a good dowel - this might be difficult
