hacking peanut butter: bird edition
für Lärchen & Eulen
fun fact for starters
there is actually peanut butter marketed for birds which looks exactly like the human one https://www.globus-baumarkt.de/p/elles-wildvogelfutter-erdnussbutter-500-g-0629101392/?utm_campaign=2024-11 | SHO | Tierbedarf&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=Alle Produkte&utm_term=4588536908357047
Making bird peanut butter/mus
- (bit guessing that) bird peanuts have no lower quality
- a 25kg sack is somewhere between 60-70€, so max 3€ a kg. no eu-bio label or similiar
Roasting
- pan on stove
- oven
- air fryer
choose ingredients
- recommended: salt (1 to 2%)
- also nice: sugar (1%)
- could help: oil (prefer rapeseed)
- fancy/seasonal variation ideas
- lemon curd
- cocoa
- sweet stuff
- coconut flakes
- (…)
Choosing the comminuting tool
Comminution is the reduction of solid materials from one average particle size to a smaller average particle size, by crushing, grinding, cutting, vibrating, or other processes.
- Cutting (e.g. blender) (better not):
- using a device with longer knives works better
- the two major heat sources (nutcutting and motor) should not heat up each other
- make smaller amounts
- when making a lot, let it cool down inbetween
- do add oil
- Grinding
- meat grinder could do it well
- or some mill
Previous experience with processing peanuts
- The process of roasting is fun. Works well in the oven.
- Using the JTC Omniblend or similiar is not recommended.
- I wrecked a cup(~90€) due to heat. Doesn’t help it’s made of plastic.
- Lots of heat production where the knives are
- takes about 15 minutes of blending with 2 kW
- Omniblend motor part smells because probably the cables melted partly or something. with letting it cool down the process would take at least half a day
- bought peanuts dicounted by 90% once,
- discovered rodent bites in some packs later
- could be worth checking discounts
- peanut butter was very tasty though and i would like to do it again
