Martin: added receipts, better formatting.

The electric pressure cooker is a great rice cooker too!

It is stored in the Kitchen, at the bottom of the shelf for personal storage of used dishes.

Instructions
Rice
valid for jazmin or basmati, and between 1 and 1,5kg.

- wash the rice thoroughly, and drain it with mesh colander.
- Add rice and water.

Dryer steamy rice with a slight crisp on the bottom: 1 liter of water for 1 kg of rice

Well done and more wet rice: 1.2 liters of water for 1 kg of rice

- Select "Rice" with the menu button. Press Start. It will take some minutes to warm up, then a 10 min counter starts.

- When finished " bb " appears, it's keeping the rice warm. Press Cancel.

- Let the rice cool down and do not release the steam to speed it up! When the lid can be opened, done!

Potatoes
Prepare potatoes by cutting them to similar size. 5cm diameter is a good measurement.
- Fill pot, but be careful not to overfill beyond the lip of the pot. The valve on the lid should move freely.

- Add around 200ml of water

- Select steam program and increase time to X minutes.

Beans
- Wash them and soak for many hours. Throw away the soaking water.
- Put in pressure cooker, cover with water, add salt and half a tea spoon of baking soda. Herbs, onion in quarters, garlic, are optional.
- Choose bean program.
For small beans soaked overnight it was too much. When 5 min left cancel the program. "bb" should be cancelled. too.

I'm less sure about beans yet, because too many variables. But it is around these lines.

Quinoa
It also works for Quinoa, with the same "Rice" program and 1:1 with water by weight.

Martin: /* Timing */

👥 We want to be efficient and respectful of peoples' time. We acknowledge the fact that in-person meetings are not the best format for all kinds of work and try to be accessible also to people who are physically distant.

Timing
We set clear starting and ending times for meetings. We consider it a practice of respect and reliability to be on time. Being on time actually requires being a bit early. While it can be nice to make an announcement that a meeting is soon to begin, it is not necessary, and we see time-keeping ultimately as an individual responsibility (we should have watches that can be borrowed.) The people at a meeting are always empowered to start on time, even recommended to, to resist a loosening of standards.

It should be known that it is generally disturbing to come to a meeting late (some more than others). Knowing that, people should use their judgement whether it is worth coming to a meeting late or not. If coming late, people are asked to take care not to further disturb by:

* calming themselves before entering the meeting
* not apologizing
* quickly and quietly finding a place
* carefully listening to catch up

We expect meetings to end at the time set initially. This is ultimately the responsibility of the facilitator, if the meeting has one. Extensions are possible, but should be proposed and consented in the meeting.

Hand signals
To make it possible to give silent feedback we use hand signals. Their use is to ‘comment’ without disrupting the speaker. We mostly just use:
* 🙌 raised & wiggling ("jazz") hands: agree, sounds good, etc
* ✋ raised hand: I want to speak (next)
* T "t-shape": technical point (speaker volume, time, language, etc)

Additional to the list above we sometimes use the so-called ‘temperature check’ to get an understanding of the feeling of the group towards a certain issue. To achieve that one person asks the group for said temperature check and then everybody wiggles their hands either downward (cold, no support, maybe even resistance), upward (hot, big support, enthusiasm) or somewhere in the middle.

Pads
Our main meetings (like CoMe or PlaMe) usually are backed up by corresponding online pads which contain the procedure and topics visible and editable for everyone. This means that people often bring laptops or phones to follow what’s going on. Facilitators in turn usually don’t readout everything or explain the format in the beginning, since it’s technically available already.

Martin: /* Repro what? */

💖 How we organize our reproductive work.

Repro what?
Reproductive work is the work that needs to be done to keep things running. It’s the underlying foundation that people need to focus on something else. It’s about food, cleaning, maintenance, tidiness and social care. Or to say it with wikipedia:

<blockquote>Reproductive labor or work is often associated with care giving and domestic housework roles including cleaning, cooking, child care, and the unpaid domestic labor force. Wikipedia
</blockquote>
We recognize this kind of work as extremely important and make structures to try and distribute it on as many shoulders as reasonably possible.

Systems we use
We have come up with different systems for different use cases. These systems are by no means exhaustive and they are always a work in progress.

Power Hour
The weekly time of communal cleaning is meant to establish basic cleanliness and include every resident. It’s a well tested and often improved structure of ours that deserves its’ own page: Power hour

Task lottery
Just like the name suggests this is a lottery for tasks. In this case it’s an online toll custom made for us but adaptable to many cases (and important enough to have its’ own page: Task lottery). We mainly use it for communal food preparation shifts.

Repro Sheet
The repro sheet exists in many different versions in a variety of places. It’s simplicity is what makes it so attractive and versatile: You just make a table, put tasks to each day and let people fill themselves in.

This is very useful for times of heightened organization levels, like building weeks when we invite external people to help us with construction work. The influx of new people and the focus on joint efforts results in frequent (maybe even daily) meetings, which can also be used to make sure the repro sheet gets filled.

Repro work that is not covered
We are fully aware that not all the necessary repro work is covered by our systems and that it never will be. Things like emotional care work can not be pressed into a system. Sure, there are ways to try like e.g. appointing a person that can be approached, but who’s to say that people who have a problem will open up to this exact person? There will always be work done that is not part of a system. We have accepted it and try to incorporate this understanding most productively.

Laundry
Since the perfect moment for doing laundry depends heavily on the weather (solar power, drying space and rain water available) we do not subject it to any system for now. Tilmann is especially motivated to run washing machines when the time is right. He will often do huge amounts of laundry on sunny days and then leave baskets of clean wet laundry in the K20 entrance. If you see one, feel very much invited to put it up somewhere. :) More on laundry on its’ own page: Laundry

Food on the weekends
The weekends are a structure-free time. People can make food if they feel like it, but nobody is expecting to get fed. Often people just eat small meals in small groups or someone spontaneously prepares something.

Cleaning of central area
The Main kitchen, the Snack kitchen and the Dining room are used especially much, which naturally results in more need for cleaning. Although we expect everyone to tidy up behind themselves and sometimes do the extra effort of wiping a table or washing some pots, it is obvious that some people do more of this than others.

Usually it goes in waves: - Someone takes extra care and everything looks neat. - That person doesn’t feel like doing this service anymore and/or gets annoyed. - They bring it up or just stop doing it. - If nobody takes over it gets messier, to a point where more people complain. - Everybody becomes more aware and puts in more effort. - Things look neat again. - Over time most people stop putting in extra effort. - And we’re back to the beginning.

So far there was never intense frustration and bringing up the topic actually works. But only for a while. And maybe that’s also okay..?

Everything out of the ordinary
Irregular cleaning, sorting, organizing and maintaining is always dependent on the initiative of individuals. If they want to make a big communal action out of it, it might work. How it usually goes, though, is that someone sees a task, feels motivation, gets started and maybe someone else joins in.

Martin: /* Time and place */

✔️ The Coordination Meeting is the only weekly meeting everyone is recommended to join. This makes it the main ‘real-life’ event we have for sharing information and ideas. We try and keep it short, and as relevant for the participants as possible. In consequence, it can be quite rapid: it’s not a good place for resolving emotional conflicts or making complex decisions.

Time and place
The default is Monday 10 am in the dining room. The meeting lasts until 11 am maximum. Therefore time management to cover all sections is a crucial task for the Facilitator.

Scope and importance
This is the most important meeting at Kanthaus. It takes place every week, we take notes which we publish on our website and we expect people to take part if they want to know what’s going on.

Facilitation
A facilitator guides through the meeting, reads out the relevant informational sections and guides through the discussion points. Topics are collected before-hand in the CoMe pad. This document is then used as base for the meeting by the facilitator.

Requirements
* a Kanthaus nextcloud account with membership of the <code>Kanthaus</code> group
* a Kanthaus Mattermost account with access to the private <code>kanthaus-residence</code> channel
* to know where the cash box is and how to open it

<span id="preparation"></span>
Preparation
<span id="check-dates"></span>
Check dates
Ensure that both meta-data date and markup date are current.

<span id="residence-record"></span>
Residence record
Check that the residence record is up to date.

<span id="run-the-script"></span>
Run the script
After you have updated the records, go to the Forgejo action, click on any run in the list and press “Re-run all jobs”. - After some minutes, the bot will post data to the <code>kanthaus-residence</code> channel. - Copy the contents in the gray ‘stats’ box to the <code>Previous week stats</code> CoMe section

<span id="trash"></span>
Trash
Check the dates for trash pickups in the Kanthaus calendar and write them down in the <code>Schedule</code> section. Make sure to include any trash pickup on the next monday, as next CoMe will be to late to plan for it.

<span id="money"></span>
Money
Check the donation container in the k20 hallway and deposit it in the cash box. List this sum plus any other donation in the last week in the <code>Income</code> CoMe section.

<span id="evaluations"></span>
Evaluations
Included in the post you sent to <code>kanthaus-residence</code> earlier are any evaluation notices. Copy <code>Due for evaluation</code> and <code>Due for evaluation soon</code> entries to the <code>Evaluations and check-ins</code> CoMe section

<span id="during"></span>
During
There are no fixed rules, so feel free to add your own touch and do (small) experiments. Some general advice that seems to have worked so far: - Notify people 10 minutes before the meeting starts. - Start as close to 10:00 as possible. - Go through the ordered points in order, even if nothing has changed. - At the end of each section, ask people if they have anything add (and give them some moments to think!) - Do moderate discussion if off-topic or too detailed. You can always suggest a small group forms for special topics. - Try to finish the meeting before 11:00. If you think it really makes sense to extend it, announce that. Make a clear announcement when the meeting is over, and if Power Hour assingments will be done right away.

<span id="afterwards"></span>
Afterwards
‘Sanitize’ the CoMe pad by removing any data which shouldn’t be published. This includes anything marked <code>to be removed</code> or <code>tbr</code>, as well as any personal information about people who haven’t agreed to it.

Copy CoMe pad contents to the website. A graphical way of doing this can be done by: - Go to the minutes folder - Click <code>Add File</code> -&gt; <code>New File</code> - As filename use <code>YYYY-MM-DD_CoMe/item.md</code> (e.g. <code>2023-05-15_CoMe/item.md</code>) - Copy the following metadata header (including the <code>---</code>) into this new document, and fix the date:

<pre>---
title: Coordination Meeting
date: &quot;2023-MM-DD&quot;
taxonomy:
tag: [come]
---</pre>
* Copy the CoMe pad content from the Edit mode/Bearbeiten Modus (black window) after the metadata header.
* Change the commit message to something like <code>add CoMe minutes for YYYY-MM-DD</code>
* Click <code>Commit changes</code>
* That´s it! After a few minutes the CoMe-minutes should appear on the website.

Prepare the CoMe pad for next week - clear all information that is no longer relevant (i.e. most of it except regular schedule events) - put forward the meta-data date and markup date to next CoMe

Then, finally, notify #kanthaus that the minutes are online and pad is cleared. Well done!

Adaptability
The CoMe pad is not subject to the core documents which means that facilitators can change it as they see fit and add or omit sections to their liking.

<small>Sections which have been used reliably for a long time are (in chronological order):</small>
Cooking

Martin:

Cooking is quite central to all activity in Kanthaus. It takes place mostly in the Kitchen.

Here are some best practices to get it done effectively, efficiently, and not annoying anyone.

Frying
- Use the extractor for fumes and steam.

- Additionally open window and close all doors when frying smelly animal products. Alternatively, there is portable equipment to cook in the garden.

- Use stainless steel pans for general stir frying. They are virtually indestructible.

- Use non stick pans for eggs, tortillas, pancakes, and other sensitive and sticky meals. Non stick pans are sensitive to temperature and they get scratched when having to clean burnt food.

- DO NOT use metal utensils on non stick surfaces. No buts, JUST DON'T.

- DO NOT use power level 9 on the stove tops, unless you are actively watching it and stirring, or there is sufficient water in the pan/pot. It burns stuff FAST.

- Do not use the stove top glass surface to do other stuff. It breaks.

- If an alarm sounds, the controls are wet, or self destruction protocol was activated.

Baking (oven)

Our oven is amazing and full of features.

But experience has shown that spills are quite annoying to clean, especially fats that burn and stink. So, consider some type of containment when it can get messy.

Containers of durable foods
- Close lids of buckets FULLY and THOROUGHLY. Moths are really sneaky!

- Spices: refill when empty. Refill cabinet is in the intermediate storage room.

Ingredients
We encourage cooks to look for and use existing ingredients as follow:

1) Fresh stuff that will go bad fast, like green leaf veggies.

2) Other fresh unprocessed foods.

3) Freezer stuff, because it takes up space.

4) Dry or canned durable food.

- Food processor, for slicing or grating many vegetables

- Pressure cooker: for potatoes, beans, rice, quinoa, and all sorts of other meals

This is no dogma, merely a preference in line with our practice of saving food and trying to not buy much. Fresh ingredients are usually healthier, and are less appealing as time goes by, increasing it's chances of being thrown away.

🐚 Kanthaus offers different levels of privatization for rooms, beds and desks. Some can be reserved for a limited amount of time and some can be claimed until they are unclaimed again by their user.

Different levels of sleeping spot privatization
Sleeping spots come in three different variants: - claimed bed in communal sleeping room - claimed bed in multi-purpose room - claimed private room with bed

Claimed bed in communal sleeping room: communal
In communal sleeping rooms like the Dorm, the (original) Communal Sleeping Room, the Cat Plane Dream Basket and the Sorano, you can claim your bed using the sheet on the outside of the door. There is no time limit on your claim. You can leave reasonable amounts of private items in and around the bed, as long as they don’t interfere with others.

It is expected that when leaving for a few days or more, the reserved bed would be made available again for other people (by whipping the name from the reservation sheet), and cleared of all personal belongings.

Claimed bed in multi-purpose room: semi-private
There are just two multi-purpose rooms: the Fansipan and the Intermediate Storage Room. Both have one big bed each and additional features which make it necessary for the room to stay accessible (e.g. claimable desks and the vortex). The beds in these rooms count as semi-private since in reality people usually don’t get disturbed during the night, even though the theoretical possibility exists.

On the beds you can find a weekly reservation sheet in which you can reserve it for a specific time frame up to 1 week (although it is best practice to only reserve for 2-3 nights at once to give others the possibility of signing in, too). Leaving personal items in and around the bed is only permitted during the time of your reservation. The week sheet is cleared every Monday as task handed out during CoMe.

Multi-purpose rooms have an additional card system on the outside of the door to indicate if the bed is already in use or not. This is to be understood along the lines of ‘If you’re looking for a sleeping spot, no need to look in here’ and not like a prohibition to enter!

Claimed private room with bed: private
Kanthaus has 4 reservable private rooms: the Lantern, the (original) Private the Hipster, and the Cloud Room.

On the outside of the doors you can find a reservation sheet in which you can reserve the room for a specific time frame up to 1 week (although it is best practice to only reserve for 2-3 nights at once to give others the possibility of signing in, too).
Next to the reservation sheet on the door you can find the occupancy indicator. It allows to show that the room is in actual use and no-one is invited in. This is important because private rooms which are reserved but empty can still be used spontaneously by someone else as long as they’re freed immediately when the person who did the reservation wants to use them (and the occupancy indicator should not be used when casually using a room during someone else's reservation).

Desks
In the Main Office, the Silent Office and the Fansipan people can claim desks. Desk claims are without time limit and include the right to store personal items, as well as creating more storage space in and around the desk, as long as it doesn’t disturb anybody.

It is expected that when leaving for a few days or more, at least the table space would be made temporarily usable for other people.
Toilet flush
The original flush has the problem of not closing properly which lead to a lot of wasted water. That’s why we removed the cover and operate it manually now. This is how it looks like:

The white part on the left (let’s call it flushing part) needs to be lifted for water to flush down into the toilet. Letting it go down again will stop the water flow.

Troubleshooting
If the water doesn’t stop running down into the toilet, there might be some dirt that prevents it from closing properly. Just move and turn the flushing part to ‘clean’ the orifice it’s supposed to close.

If the tank in the wall doesn’t stop refilling, the black part of the filling valve is probably stuck below the white frame. Look at the picture above to see that it needs to be above the white frame.

Pass-through heater
A Clage MCX 7 6.5 kW electrical pass-through heater is installed below the sink. It automatically switches on when you turn on hot water. The heater has three settings which heat the water to different temperatures as indicated below:

* ECO - green light (35 degrees)
* COMFORT - orange light (38 degrees)

Here are some best practices to get it done effectively, efficiently, and not annoying anyone.

Frying
- Use the extractor for fumes and steam.

- Additionally open window and close all doors when frying smelly animal products.

This is no dogma, merely a preference in line with our practice of saving food and trying to not buy much. Fresh ingredients are usually healthier, and are less appealing as time goes by, increasing it's chances of being thrown away.
We want anyone cooking to do it happily and without feeling judged. Home made food is a gift we deeply appreciate.

Tips
Cooks are invited to use our wide offer of non obvious labor saving devices:

- Nicer dicer, for quick cubes or sticks of veggies

- Food processor, for slicing or grating many vegetables

- Pressure cooker: for potatoes, beans, rice, quinoa, and all sorts of other meals

- Crepe maker: no need for a non stick pan

- Salad spinner: to conveniently drain the water out of washed stuff

The electric pressure cooker is a great rice cooker too!

It is stored in the Kitchen, at the bottom of the shelf for personal storage of used dishes.

Instructions (so far):

valid for jazmin or basmati rice, and between 1 and 1,5kg.

- wash the rice thoroughly, and drain it with mesh colander.
- Add rice and water.
1to1 for a dryer steamy rice with a very slight crisp on the bottom.
1 rice to 1,2 water for well done and a bit more wet.
- Select "Rice" with the menu button. Press Start.
It will take some minutes to warm up, then a 10 min counter starts.
- When finished " bb " appears, it's keeping the rice warm. Press Cancel.
- Let the rice cool down and do not release the steam to speed it up!
When the lid opens, rice is ready.

Best way to cook beans too!

It also works for Quinoa, with the same "Rice" program and 1:1 with water by weight.
Maintenance and repair
If you break something, fix it. If you don't feel able to, tell someone and do it together.

The Communal Bike Shed has all bicycle specific tools, spare parts, and a portable bike holder. The Workshop carry general tools, hooks to hang bicycles from the ceiling, and compressed air.
Communal bike maintenance is very much appreciated repro work! If you want to get involved, please talk to us.
Here are some best practices to get it done effectively, efficiently, and not annoying anyone.

Frying
- Use the extractor for fumes and steam.

- Additionally open window and close all doors when frying animal products.

- Use stainless steel pans for general stir frying. They are virtually indestructible.

- Use non stick pans for eggs, pancakes, and other sensitive and sticky meals. Non stick pans are sensitive to temperature and they get scratched when having to clean burnt food.

- DO NOT use metal utensils on non stick surfaces. No buts, JUST DON'T.

- DO NOT use power level 9 on the stove tops, unless you are actively watching it and stirring, or there is a sufficient water in the pan/pot. It burns stuff FAST.

- Do not use the stove top glass surface to do other stuff. It breaks.

- If an alarm sounds, the controls are wet, or self destruction protocol was activated.

- Food processor, for slicing or grating carrots, for example

- Pressure cooker: for potatoes, beans, rice and all sorts of other meals

- Crepe maker: no need for a non stick pan

- Additionally open window and close all doors when frying animal products.

- Use stainless steel pans for general stir frying. They are virtually indestructible.

- Use non stick pans for eggs, pancakes, and other sensitive and sticky meals. Non stick pans are sensitive to temperature and they get scratched when having to clean burnt food.

Martin: minor corrections

📦️ "Stuff" is the term widely used in Kanthaus to refer to physical items that take up space in the house and are not food. Stuff can be useful or not, communal or private, a blessing or a curse. Managing stuff is a vital administrative task of the house, so we came up with several systems.

The Vortex
De-cluttering actions
Formerly known as ‘sales’ (based on the idea of doing an ‘internal yard sale’), which admittedly is an extremely confusing term, de-cluttering actions are events to clear out storage areas.

Communal stuff de-cluttering
On example for communal stuff de-cluttering is the K20 entrance with its communal shoe and jacket shelf. Let’s say we want to de-clutter the jacket shelf, the process is as follows:

# Empty the shelf and put all its contents to an accessible location. People need to be able to look through everything there. It should also not be in the way. Past locations were the Dragon Room or Elephant Room tables.
# Specify a time frame for the event and communicate it on site (the shelf itself, the sorting area and on Mattermost). Past actions usually took 1-2 weeks maximum.
# During the event people are expected to take out the things they want to keep and hang them back onto the shelf.
# When the time is up everything that’s left will go through the vortex.

Private stuff de-cluttering
Basically the same as the communal stuff de-cluttering, private stuff de-cluttering are events to make sure we don’t have unnecessary items in public spaces for private items. This is only necessary in the entrance of K20 where we have space for private shoes and jackets without name tags.

Spitz Storage Room concepts
Since the Spitz Storage Room is the newest storage area, this time we took good care to come up with a nice system before it is filled with stuff. The details are in the room page, but the general idea is as outlined below.

Communal stuff in Spitz Storage Room
* clear categories of stuff
* clear labels
* only sorted boxes are allowed in the area

Private stuff in Spitz Storage Room
* everybody can have up to a stack of 3 banana boxes
* everything needs to be labeled with a name (contact info is suggested)
* people who are neither Volunteer or Member need to indicate when they last accessed the box (LDA = last date accessed). After a year of LDA, residents can try to contact the owner of the box, and then treat it as communal stuff.

Privatization of communal stuff
There is no perfectly choreographed process for privatization of communal stuff. However, there are best practices, which usually involve the following: - clearly identify the items you’d like to take, possibly with pictures - communicate your request online so that everybody has the chance to see it in time - formulate a deadline until which people are expected to react - be honestly open to other people’s potential claims on items and engage in productive discussion if necessary

- When finished " bb " appears, it's keeping the rice warm. Press Cancel.
- Let the rice cool down and do not release the steam to speed it up!
When the lid opens, rice is ready.

Best way to cook beans too!

"bb" should be cancelled. too.

Things that need occasional, infrequent or seasonal maintenance

These are tasks needed to be done, before they become a problem, and without the thing itself letting you know of impending doom. Therefore only close inspection will reveal its necessity.

Seasonal maintenance
The gutter and roof of the sheds needs to be cleaned of falling leaves, to prevent leaks inside.

Air filters in each room should be washed twice a year. Greasy ones should be replaced. The timing is autoum, when windows are not open anymore and the dependency of ventilation is higher.

Heat exchange should be rinsed and filters changed in the ventilation system.

During the summer, sidewalk needs to be weeded from time to time, to avoid complaints from the government.

Twice a year, duvets need to be changed between double or single layer, for colder and warmer months.

The radiators need to be cleaned before the heating starts, for better air flow and thus efficiency.

Buckets collecting water from leaks in K18 attic need to be emptied regularly during rainy season, and occasionally in summer.

Garden water tap needs to be shut off and emptied from the basement before freezing temperatures can damage it. Reconnected in spring.

When it gets cold outside, there are a few places with condensation or constant wettness, that need to be treated with hydrogen peroxide to prevent mold growth.

Infrequent maintenance
Fume extractor in the kitchen needs to be washed (degreased) from time to time.

Locks (doors and bicycle) need to be lubed with thin oil, WD-40 or graphite powder when they are not smooth anymore, or the key moves with difficulty.

Bicycle chains need to be cleaned and lubricated. Ideally before it is noticeable by noise. Proper lubrication is important in winter, when there is salt on the roads and more humidity.

Bike tires need to be pumped to the specified pressure on its side. No more, no less.

Dishwasher needs filter cleaning and salt.

Power tools need a pressure air bath, especially after dusty working conditions.

Vacuum cleaners need the bags to be replaced when full, before they break or start bypassing the bag and sending everything to the motor.

Chopping knifes need to be sharpened, for a more pleasant and safe cutting experience.

Freezers need to be defrosted when there is enough ice forming.

The drain for condensation in the back of the fridge gets clogged from time to time.

LED strips facing up should be cleaned, seldom, from accumulated dust.

Windows can be cleaned, both sides, and even inside. They get progressively dirty and people get used to it.

Blue tank in the basement rain water room needs to be emptied before full.
